Why do we keep our fees so low? It is our belief and our policy that our own permanent students benefit
greatly from working alongside our visiting students. You are an asset to the School, whom we are happy to subsidise. The advantage
to you of daily contact with Russian students is obvious.
Friends and total security
Russia has become increasingly involved with the outside world. Our
students are preparing themselves for international careers – in
business, diplomatic service, politics, etc. You will be their
important immediate international contact and a friend to cherish.
Red-Eyes-at-Departure Syndrome is one disease our foreign students
are not immunised against. And they do come back! Our School
attracts students from all former Soviet Republics (now, new
independent states). Total security is part of our contract with the
parents, and we have an over 10-year record to prove that we stand
by it. (For more details, see Further Details).
Full-Immersion,
Tailor-Made Russian Language Courses
Full
immersion in the Russian Language goes without saying. You will be
cordially invited (and heartily encouraged) to participate in all
our extra-curricular activities – sports, singing, dancing and
dramatic circles and, of course, partying. Your Russian Language
Course will be adapted to your level and needs. Our teachers are
experienced in helping students of Russian to prepare for GCSE,
A-level examinations of UK Examining Boards and university entrance
exams. They have developed an excellent “Russian for Business”
course.
A Wide Range of Supplementary Courses
Apart from full-immersion tuition in the Russian Language, courses in 19th-20th-Century
Russian Literature, Russian History, Political and Business Studies, Art, Theatre, Cinematograph, Music Folk Dancing and Cuisine
are available. All courses are taught in Russian and include appropriate thematic visits and tours.
Sightseeing Trips
You will be shown around Moscow, Obninsk and
the history-rich Kaluga Region, as part of the Russian Language Study Package. St
Petersburg and the Golden Ring Cities are within hours of travel and trips,
accompanied by a guide, can be arranged on request and at cost price.
Choice of Accommodation
The School gets its name, Dubravushka
(“Oak Grove”), from the beautiful old oak park at the edge of
the town of Obninsk, where our students are housed in 1950s brick cottages. One of the cottages is the School’s own Cafe.
Foreign students are offered single rooms in Dubravushka or can choose to share with
Russian students to get even more conversational practice.
For sports and fitness, there is a football pitch, doubling up as a
skating-rink in winter, volleyball grounds, ping-pong tables on the
terraces, scenic cross-country skiing pistes in the surrounding
forest and mountain-skiing slopes, which attract skiers from Moscow,
just behind the Dubravushka park. The town’s Central Swimming-Pool
and Tennis Courts are a walk away. The proprietors of friendly
stables are always delighted to provide a horse and a riding lesson.
Alternative
accommodation can be arranged with local families, in individual or
shared flats or at a hotel, in Obninsk.
The Most Environmentally Friendly Town
Of
all towns around Moscow, Obninsk provides the ideal location for
Russia’s first full-curriculum independent boarding school. 55
miles is not far but a sufficient distance from Moscow to get away
from the dirt and dust and the vain bustle of the metropolis.
However, you can easily get back to it, so that there is no sense of
deprivation.
The quiet scientific centre with a population of 100 000, predominantly
employees of research and academic institutes, was built in the
middle of boundless pine and birch forests - around, and for the
needs of, the Typhoon Experimental Meteorology Research Institute,
which sets ecological standards for the entire country. This is why
patches of forest were left untouched and you can still feast your
eyes on enormous ancient trees, here and there, around the town.
This also explains the words of the Chairman of the Russian Duma
Committee on Ecology: “Obninsk is the most environmentally
friendly town… All they do there is devise new ways of monitoring
the environment!”
